Best Hiking Trails near Chicago
It’s tough for us to admit this, but summer seems to have conclusively passed. While many of us are undoubtedly excited about the arrival of the cozy and somber holiday season in just a few short months, many of us are also trying to ease the transition by continuing to find ways to have fun outdoors even as temperatures cool.
In Chicago, the city is perfect in the winter. To really appreciate the outdoors, however, means getting out of the city and spending time at one of these amazing hiking trails near Chicago. Here are our favorites:
1. Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve – Lemont, IL
At less than an hour’s drive from Chicago, the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is a bit of an unknown treasure. Located in the beautiful DuPage Forest, Waterfall Glen has plenty of hiking trails, preservation areas, fishing spots and, of course, waterfalls that fill in glacial potholes (not the kind they have up in Wisconsin).
More information and directions are available through the DuPage Forest website, which you can reach by clicking here.
2. Castle Rock State Park – Oregon, IL
You’ll have to travel a bit further out of the city limits to get to this one, but boy howdy will it be worth it. Love open land? How does 2,000 acres of the stuff sound? That’s right, Castle Rock is a massive collection of plains, woods, bluffs, ravines and its famous butte. So, if you like big buttes and you cannot lie, this is your place.
More information, including directions, is available on the park’s website, which you can reach by clicking here.
3. Indiana Dunes State Park – Chesterton, IN
One of the wonderful things about living in Chicago is that heading north or south for less than an hour will take you on an interstate adventure. One of the best adventures you can take is to the Indiana Dunes State Park in the Hoosier house next door. Situated on a massive canyon-esque landscape, these sand dunes majestically rise and fall around the Lake along with the trails that weave their way in, out, on top of and around them.
A favorite weekend destination for Metro Ford staff, the dunes take on a frozen and ethereal beauty in the winter as well. More information is available on the Indiana DNR website, which you can reach by clicking here.
4. Kankakee River State Park – Bourbonnais, IL
Just over an hour away from Chicago, you’ll find a beautiful convergence of water and land. This 4,000-acre park features miles and miles of trails including the popular Rock Creek Trail. Waterfalls and canyons abound as well here so be sure to bring a camera for those especially-photogenic moments.
